Life in the Freezer: The Bountiful Sea  (1993)

The biggest of any seabird chick

In the depths of the Antarctic, naturalist, leading conservationist and world-famous wildlife presenter David Attenborough introduces this award-winning series, Life in the Freezer. Equipped with boats, diving apparatus, suspended capsules and remote-controlled cameras a BBC crew spent three years filming seasonal changes in this highly challenging environment.

As the continent effectively doubles its size in winter, stunning cinematography provides an incredible insight into the creatures that make their home in this harsh and hostile land. Albatrosses soar through the sky using their impressive wingspan, giant petrels scavenge on dead penguin chicks and humpback whales work together, trapping krill in an elaborate wall of bubbles.

Capturing the stark beauty of this forbidding land and the surprisingly rich animal population of its surrounding seas, the BBC enlisted the talents of world-renowned wildlife cinematographers, including award-winning photographers Hugh Miles, Simon King and Doug Allan.

An intriguing and comprehensive account of the extreme changes this massive landmass undergoes each year, The Bountiful Sea is the first of six episodes in this hugely popular series, and provides an unrivalled glimpse into life ‘in the freezer’.

Life in the Freezer won the 1994 Wildscreen Festival Best Series award.
