Mountains of the Snow Leopard
(1994)
Deep in the Mongolian mountains, mammalogist, passionate conservationist and leading field biologist Dr George Schaller explores the habitat of the critically endangered snow leopard.
Incredibly isolated and exposed to a severe climate, Mongolia’s remote position allows it to harbour a variety of large animal species, extinct everywhere else in the world. Stunning cinematography captures the colourful lifestyle of the free-spirited nomadic peoples, the majestic herds of Kulan and Schaller’s touching encounter with the long fabled snow leopard.
Shadowing Schaller’s journey as he educates local herdsman, the production examines much of the country’s unique wildlife, recording behaviour never before captured on film, including the first ever footage of the rare Gobi bear.
Broadcast as part of the Survival series, Mountains of the Snow Leopard is a poignant conservation piece, a fascinating insight into life on one of the most mysterious lands left on Earth.
