Zoo Quest : Zoo Quest to Madagascar
(1961)
Also known as: Programme 5
In the depths of the Madagascan forest, passionate naturalist, conservationist and hugely popular wildlife presenter David Attenborough searches for the elusive indri, the lemur displaying striking similarities to Marco Polo's long fabled "dog headed man".
Zoo Quest to Madagascar: 5 brings to life the private world of these characteristic creatures. Held in superstitious awe by islanders, little was known of the indris' behaviour before this programme was made. Extremely shy animals, Attenborough and his team attracted a family using recordings of their 'spine-chilling unearthly howls', their stunning photography detailing them as they issue alarm calls, comfort each other and relax leisurely in the treetops.
Attenborough provides an unique glimpse of these previously unseen primates, with memorable scenes following the entire family as they assemble on branches overhanging the road, their strong legs powering them as one by one they leap across the open space.
Zoo Quest to Madagascar: 5 is an engaging and entertaining view of an endearing animal whose name, when translated from the Madagascan language, literally means "look at that".
