Avocet Island  (1951)

Visting Avocet Island

An absorbing exploration of the bird life on Havergate Island, Avocet Island is an early film from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Examining the lives and general behaviour of the avocets, the film includes a wealth of interesting footage. Adults fly several miles to feed at low tides, breeding birds are fiercely territorial and disputes break out between neighbouring families.

Owned and maintained by the RSPB, the Island is a major breeding ground for avocets, and intriguing footage documents how the water level was regulated manually, using sluice gates. Celebrating the successful breeding of chicks, Avocet Island is an interesting insight into an ongoing conservation effort, where a lot of time, money and effort finally started to yield results.
