Springwatch: Episode 1
(2005)
A groundbreaking and massively successful live broadcast, the first ever episode of Springwatch was broadcast in March 2005. Presented from a working Devon farm by noted twitcher Bill Oddie and wildlife enthusiast Kate Humble, the production offers an intriguing look into British species reappearing after the cold winter.
In conjunction with the series the BBC, together with the Woodland Trust, ran the largest ever survey into the arrival of spring. Encouraging the public to record their first sightings of six key species via the internet, this first episode revealed the initial findings and looked at the impact climate change is having on native species.
Revealing action from a number of hidden cameras in and around nest boxes and burrows, the hour long episode also features renowned wildlife photographer Simon King on location on the Isle of Mull, observing a family of white-tailed eagles. Hugely popular, Springwatch has now become an annual event and is credited with raising awareness of a wealth of flora and fauna within the British Isles.
