The Nature of Australia: A Separate Creation  (1988)

David Parer filming tiger sharks during the filming of Nature of Austrailia: A Seperate Creation

An insightful, educational account of evolution within this vast and isolated continent, A Separate Creation was the first film in the hugely popular, award-winning Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) series, The Nature of Australia. Broadcast to mark Australia’s Bicentennial the series was made by renowned producer, and long-running Head of the ABC Natural History Unit (NHU), Dione Gilmour.

Bringing to life the history and growth of this remarkable landmass Gilmour collaborated with the BBC, WNET and the Australian Heritage Foundation. Enlisting the talents of world famous wildlife cinematographers, the team includes the award-winning filmmaker David Parer. Skillfully charting the development of marsupials, stunning visuals trace their rise from the lush forests of the ancient super-continent Gondwanaland to their modern day position on the dry and sun-scorched plains.

Released as a separate entity as Gondwanaland broke apart, Australia’s isolation resulted in a wealth of unique wildlife. Impressive photography examines these strange and intriguing species, as kangaroos box on parched and dusty earth, koalas doze through sun filled days and platypus dart through river systems

Beautifully filmed, A Separate Creation is a comprehensive exploration of the distinctive and diverse wildlife inhabiting the world’s largest island.
