Banking on Disaster  (1987)

This is the story of a David and Goliath struggle filmed in the jungles of western Amazonia. On the one side Indians and Rubber tappers trying to defend their forest aginst speculators and developers. On the other side sophisticated banks- like The World Bank- financing the massive expansion of the Brazilian frontier. When the catasrophic results of the bank's loans lead to a popular outcry, Chico Mendes, a Rubber Tapper, takes his complaints to the top- to the United States Congress in Washington. Banking on Disaster won the 1988 Wildscreen Festival Conservation award.
