The Natural World (BBC 1983 - 2012): Ticket to the Wild  (1987)

Within the fences of Britain's railways lies the longest nature reserve in the world - a private wildlife sanctuary where people are forbidden to tread.  There, two-thirds of our native wild flowers survive.  they are the unwitting bequest of Victorian lengthmen who cared for the verges.  This profusion of plants and animals is a unique legacy of the "age of the train".
