The World About Us (1967 - 1987): The Year of the Green Centre
(1974)
Australia's wettest year on record [to 1973] has brought floods and disaster to many areas. Central Australia is the driest part of this driest of permanently inhabited continents, and yet even this 'Red Centre' has been deluged with its most widespread and persistent rains for a century. It turned green almost overnight.
A normally drought-gripped land has been awakened into the most vividly spectacular bloom of desert flowers and animals in living memory. The desert rains have triggered birds into breeding and produced abundant food for insects, lizards, mice and men.
