The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau (1966-1976): South to Fire and Ice
(1974)
The first of four repors from the Calypso on a visit to the Antarctic. When Cousteau sails to the coldest, windiest and most reacherous of all continents, it's more than just a diving expedition beneath icebergs that could at any time collapse. Calypso's crew rebuild the skeleton of a blue whale and search for fossils. They attempt to bathe in Antarctic waters that are too hot even for a paddle, and finally turn mountaineers to climb into the crater of a volcano explosion that blasted a huge hole in a glacier on deception Island. Cousteau dedicates this programme to Michel Laval, mountaineer and first mate of the Calypso, who lost his life in a climbing accident during the making of the film.
