Animal People: Peter Scott  (1967)

The passion of his life

Animal People was designed to give a more personal account of several high profile wildlife presenters, exploring not only their relationships with creatures, but also their ways of life. This episode examines the work of Sir Peter Scott, offering an intriguing glimpse into the comings and goings of the esteemed natural history presenter.

Founder of Wildscreen, Worldwide Fund for Nature and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Scott was an authority on wild duck and geese, and the programme was filmed at his studio, overlooking the Slimbridge Reserve in Gloucestershire.

Beautiful cinematography takes advantage of early colour technology, looking through Peter’s ‘magic window’ as sunset fades, graceful flotillas of wild swans litter the inky-black pools outside. An engaging account of this accomplished man, Peter discusses the important periods of his life whilst painting these magnificent Bewick swans, visiting ‘guests’ from Arctic Russia.

An internationally recognised illustrator of wildfowl, the programme offers a rare insight into the private world of this talented man, highlighting his scientific interest, professionalism and the aesthetic joy he derives from all manner of bird life.
