Wildlife Safari to Ethiopia : Across the Great Salt Desert  (1970)

Also known as: Programme 1
Ethiopia - the roof of Africa

An intriguing and entertaining travelogue, Wildlife Safari to Ethiopia: 1: Across the Great Salt Desert charts world-renowned wildlife producer Jeffery Boswall’s journey through this vast land-locked expanse.

Cradled in the Horn of Africa this varied land boasts a number of highly adapted species and, together with the BBC’s Natural History Unit, Boswall explores a wealth of specialised mammalian life. Recording behaviour never before captured on film, this episode includes footage of the rare African wild ass.

An impressive introduction to this beautiful land, aerial photography provides a magnificent backdrop of salt pans and towering rock columns. An early series to focus on just one country, Wildlife Safari to Ethiopia was a huge success, leading to the commission of three further ‘Safaris’. It was described by Chris Parsons, former head of the BBC’s Natural History Unit, as “arguably one of the best series of its genre ever made”.
