The Living Planet: The Building of the Earth  (1984)

Also known as: Programme 1
The changing face of the earth

The opening episode of The Living Planet, David Attenborough's second major natural history series, The Building of the Earth is an in-depth account of the huge geological forces that have shaped our planet.

Winning an Emmy for Outstanding Information Series, complex earth science is explained in a logical manner with its implications on modern day life explored in detail.

Through the world-famous cinematography of the BBC's Natural History Unit, Attenborough examines the special physiology plants and animals have developed to cope with the Earth's varying physical and biological conditions. Tracking the Kali Gandaki River through the Himalayas, skillful photography demonstrates the different adaptations species possess as the conditions alter from the tropical regions of the lower river to the higher polar peaks.

Placing nature centre stage the crew filmed in highly challenging environments. Waiting over two years to hear of an erupting volcano they had to drop everything when news finally came in, rushing to reach it in time.

An informative and highly educational piece, The Building of the Earth provides an incredible insight into both the history of our planet, and the remarkable effect an organism's habitat has on its physical form.
