The Trials of Life: Arriving  (1990)

A thousand million lives launched

The opening episode of David Attenborough's third major Life series, this film is the first of twelve episodes detailing the mammoth journey from conception to adulthood, throughout the animal kingdom.

Exploring the various methods by which animals come into the world, Attenborough travels extensively, examining a wide range of weird and wonderful 'arrival' techniques. Christmas Island red crabs are land based yet dash into the tidal waters to deposit their eggs, giant clams release multitudes of ova, and a wasp species starts life inside a caterpillar eventually eating its unsuspecting host.

Through the world-famous cinematography of the BBC Natural History Unit, David Attenborough investigates a wealth of marine, land and ornithological life, highlighting the extraordinary diversity present in the tactics employed for the propagation of life on earth.
