Path of the Rain God
(1985)
Also known as: Episode 2: The River Valleys
Waters that have fallen on one of the poorest and infertile habitats, the Maya mountains, now emerge from caves or plunge as waterfalls into one of the richest biological communities on earth - A tropical rainforest. Here life is rich and diverse but it is this very richness that creats intense competition. The result is a complex interaction between plant and animal species. In the dry season there are glimpses of Jaguar and Tapir as they are drawn to the rivers. Other animals are specially adapted to these tropical waters. The extraordinary Yapok or Water opossum is the only known marsupial adapted to a semi aquatic existence and the fishing bats have uniquely adapted feeet capable of actual hooking out fish from the water as they skim over the surface of the river.
