Walter Higham
One of the pioneers of ornithological filmmaking, Walter Higham enjoyed a long and successful career in wildlife cinematography. Capturing sequences of local bird life in the 1920s, Walter went on to contribute to numerous early films including Featherland of the Fens (1929) and The Heron and Three Birds of Prey (1930).
The 1930s saw Walter's work appearing in the Secrets of Nature series, an innovative set of single reeled educational films released by British Instructional Films (BIF). The Bittern was released in 1931 and was followed the next year by Raiders of the Fens and Springtime in the Scillies.
Blazing a trail in bird cinematography, Walter travelled extensively filming avian life in areas as diverse as the French Carmargue, Hungary and the Scottish Highlands. An experienced bird lecturer and author, Walter released Birds in Colour in 1946 as part of The New Naturalist series. A fully-illustrated wild bird book, it featured 89 of Walter's photographs and chapters on bird welfare and the public; birds and travel; and a chapter on bird photography.
1949 saw the release of Birds in Camera – Twenty-five Years of Bird Photography, featuring the images of many rare and interesting birds Walter had collected over his last quarter of a century in the field.
When the BBC Natural History Unit introduced Peter Scott's long-running strand Look in 1955, Walter's footage featured heavily. He appeared on the third ever episode discussing his film, Land of the Flamingo (1955). In the following years Walter put in numerous appearances and in 1961 Look's 78th episode was devoted entirely to his career. The Best of Walter Higham profiled his achievements and featured some of his earliest footage from Yorkshire taken in 1925.
